Darin Smith
Managing Principal
1330 Broadway Suite 450 Oakland, CA 94612

Darin Smith gets tremendous satisfaction helping clients to leverage the value of their property assets and regulatory frameworks to deliver community benefits. Darin has helped many clients successfully plan for and negotiate development projects on public properties to achieve affordable housing, parks and open space, and community facilities like health clinics, libraries, and city or county departments alongside private housing and commercial space. Darin also works with communities to craft affordable housing and other community benefit requirements or incentive programs that work within local market contexts, balancing the need for project feasibility with the desire to achieve certain outcomes for community gain. In recent years, Darin’s projects have been focused squarely on equity concerns, aiming to deliver long-needed services, amenities, and opportunities to under-served communities and/or to prevent displacement of lower-income households.

Darin joined EPS in 2000, after a few years with a similar consulting firm in Maryland. He received a Master of City Planning (MCP) degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where has also attended undergraduate studies. Darin loves to travel with his family, cook and eat good food, and sing and play rudimentary keyboards in a very amateurish rock band. He hopes someday to finish writing a musical he started years ago with a friend from high school.
